THIS YEAR'S WINNERS
A couple of months ago, two very special college scholarships were handed out to deserving young wom-en in our community.
The first, Jessica Walther, will be attending CCBC in the fall preparing for Maryland Institute of Art. Jessica was awarded the Phyllis Daly Scho-larship and it seems only fitting that Jessica wants to follow in Phyllis‟ footsteps and be an educator. Jessica has lived in Chartley since she was three – making it 14 years this year on Walgrove Road. She recently graduated from George Washington Carver Magnet High School for the arts with a concentration in sculptur-al art. However, she says, she has many interests including being on the Engineering club at school and teaching ore-conformation classes at Sacred Heart Parish in Glyndon.
She plans to use the $1,000 scho-larship to help offset tuition expenses this fall. This summer she is looking into many possibilities including working part time for the Fire mu-seum in Timonium, doing special events at Martha and Mary‟s Restau-rant on Main Street and even doing the occasional face painting for children‟s birthday parties. She is hoping to find cheap, reliable trans-portation for school in the fall. After transferring from CCBC after two years, she will put another three years at MICA and graduate with a masters in Art Education.
Egypt Carter was this year‟s Jo-seph Molinaro Scholarship reci-pient. She has only lived in Chartley for 2-3 years but likes it and the home she shares with her brother and parents. She noted that Homevale Road is quiet and I reminded her she „d like that when she‟s studying for finals in college. Egypt will be spending one semester at CCBC also and is planning to transfer to the Art Institute in York, PA. She will be majoring in Fashion and Retail Man-agement when she reaches York and hopes to set up her own modeling agency and own her own boutique with her degree.
Egypt‟s favorite course at Franklin High School was Economic Public Issues where they discussed and de-bated things like taxes and corporate strategies and policies such as Wal-Mart. She will be working part time at Martha and Mary‟s this summer, so stop by and say hi. She plans to use her $1,000 scholarship check to help pay for books and a new com-puter for college in the fall.
Good luck to both our scholarship recipients.
If you have an entering high school senior at one of our area schools (public or private) and you are a dues-paying member up to date with The Chartley Homeowners Associa-tion, your child can apply to be con-sidered for next year‟s scholarships. Look for the scholarship application in the January issue of the Chartley Chatter.
